PRESENTATION




Stefano Grazia was one of the first in Italy to study Indian Classical Music and Tabla. Starting from 1978 he has got different experiences of teachings by most qualified Maestros of different musical tradition of North India (gharana) such us Pt. Sankha Chatterjee from Calcutta and  Pt. Pooran Maharaj from Benares. In his concert activity he has accompanied in more than 100 concerts several Indian musicians of International fame.






Graduated in Indology (University of Bologna, 1985) was one of the very first in Italy to study Indian music, having been initiated in 1979 to the art of Tabla by Maestro Pt. Sankha Chatterjee of Calcutta. He was actually the first Italian student of this great Teacher and he attended for over 15 years his courses in Venice (Fondazione Cini) Berlin and Kolkata. In those years he also met the legendary Ravi Shankar and the tabla Master Ustad Alla Rakha, following his unic Master Class in Venice in 1980.
Since 1999 he began the concert activity, accompanying many Indian musicians of international fame in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Greece and India in over 100 concerts of Indian Classical music. In 2003 he had the great opportunity to meet and to seat with the legendary Sitar Maestro Shahid Parvez with whom he made an official CD recording and a few music tours in Italy (2004, 2008, 2011, 2013).
In 2005 he extended his musical studies to the Benares Gharana attending for 10 years the classes of Tabla Maestro Pt. Pooran Maharaj (exponent of the most important Family of Tabla Masters of Benares) and his senior disciple Shri Nihar Mehta.
In 2006 he joined the INDIA WORLD project of Bologna as artistic director for events on India and Asia. In 2007 he took part in the International festival of Akko (Israel) with the Ensemble Ananké (Jewish-Sephardic ancient music). In 2007 - 2008 he co-operated with flute Maestro Massimo Mercelli on East meets West projects in the French Festival Les Floraisons Musicales. In 2009 he took part to the Poiesis Festival of Fabriano in the project 'The Heavens of the Earth'. In 2010 he created the ensemble Ranjani, dances and music of North India, in 2013-2014 took part in KAJAL, a contemporary music project inspired to Southeast Asia project, directed by percussion Master Simone Beneventi. Since 2011 he co-operates regularly with the sarod maestro Partho Sarothy. In 2012 and 2014 he was among the selected participants of Tabla Master Class Zakir Hussein in Nice, organized by the prestigious Saptak INDIA of Shri Nihar Mehta.
Besides musical activity he lectures on Indian music and Indian culture and on intercultural relations between India and the West.
